Attending Concerts as a Musician

How music shows feel, knowing they're doing what you aspire to...

Hi there! I thought I would structure this newsletter edition a little differently and talk about a topic that’s been on my mind:

As a child, I always looked up to performers on big stages and pictured myself in their place one day. Nowadays, I still have that feeling, but it’s accompanied with more of an urgency and a strong sense of determination.

Any time I feel myself falling behind on my goals, or not knowing where to put my energy next to really see success as a musician and performer, I turn to these experiences as a source of inspiration. So I thought it’d be fun to share my perspective on the gigs I’ve attended this past month, from a performer’s perspective.

P!NK in Concert

This show was completely crazy. It was basically a concert and a circus in one. Her acrobatics were astonishing and the fact that she was going so strong, with such solid vocals, good energy and creativity to try something so fresh and new, made me feel so inspired and excited.

The colours were so vibrant and fun, but I love that the set was versatile enough to switch things up for the darker / more night-time moods! Whoever worked on bringing this concept to life deserves some admiration. I was impressed!

I don’t have many pictures of the acrobatics from this show, but here you can see some dancers hanging to the sides of the stage. Go look up the performances if you’re curious, there was so much going on that I don’t have space to write about here!

IVE in Concert

Having seen IZ*ONE’s survival show and rise to fame, then watched IVE catapult to superstardom, it was amazing to see them perform in person. I almost didn’t go to this show and was thankfully able to get a ticket last minute - I’m so glad I did!

I also love the O2 as a venue, it’s always nice to see shows there. I’m personally more a fan of enclosed arenas rather than open air stadiums, I tend to prefer it when the sound bounces back at me instead of escaping into the air! (Plus you don’t have the chance of being rained on)

They had this umbrella choreo for one song as well, which was super cute (and definitely reminded me I was still in London) ☂

Charlotte Sands in Concert

There’s a singer called Charlotte Sands who I saw support 5 Seconds of Summer last year, and I really loved her voice, her songs and her energy, so when I saw she was coming to London I decided to get tickets. This show was really refreshing because it was a much smaller gig compared to the others on this list, but that meant it felt much more attainable to me as a next step.

It’s great thinking that I would love to perform at the O2 Arena one day, but there are probably some smaller shows I need to do first. In that sense, this show felt the most inspiring to me for where I am now.

Taylor Swift in Concert

As the last show in my concert stint, I am seeing Taylor Swift perform tonight! After all the hype, I’m expecting a true spectacle (!) but, based on the last time I saw her many years ago, I know that she’ll have a way of talking to the audience that creates a strong sense of connection. I think it’s so clever and impressive how she can get an audience of 80,000 people to feel personally connected to her in one moment. I can’t wait to see what I can learn from her and her performance skills tonight.

What’s your experience with live shows?

How do you feel when you attend a concert? Do you get inspired, or do you go for a fun night out and not think much of it? Do you prefer big concert arenas or grassroots venues? Stadium shows or intimate gigs?

Hit reply and let me know about the last show you attended and how you found it!
